Chapter

Twenty-Two

The dragons alighted gracefully on the packed sand of the cavern floor. The queen waited, and the amethyst dragon announced her.

Behold, our queen Ceartais Órga.

The other dragons bowed their heads, and Merlin, Sorcha, and I gave our best Fae Court bows.

What brings you to our Sunder? the queen’s voice pierced our skulls. I could tell because all of us grabbed our heads to keep them from exploding.

I took a step closer. “The Alaska queen, Aurora Golden Scales, sent word that you had a dragon in your sunder that would like the opportunity to take a rider. We have come to discuss that with you.”

I thought that sounded precise and professional. I looked at Merlin, but he bore a permanent frown. Sorcha was staring at all the dragons in their incredible jewel-tones.

The queen narrowed her eyes, then she scanned her cavern. She said something in dragon speech, which my amulet did not translate, but she did broadcast it to our minds. Which of you has sent such a word to the outsiders?

Well, shit. That didn’t sound friendly. I shifted my feet nervously, waiting for the response.

Enfys, the little alexandrite colored dragon took a step forward. It was me, my queen, she said timidly, head bowed.

That was brave. I shook my head. This wasn’t going to go over well. As far as we knew, Enfys was currently the only dragon mage alive. The queen wasn’t going to free her from her duties to the sunder. At least I doubted it.

The dragon queen bowed her head and reached out to touch muzzles with the half-grown dragon mage. They conversed quietly, mind to mind, as we waited. When done, the little mage took a step back and looked expectantly at us.

Hmmm. My mage would like the chance to go adventuring. It is something we allow our younger dragons to do at some point. I will think on it. Come back in—I was expecting her to say two weeks, so I was shocked when she said—a day for my answer.

With that, she pivoted and launched herself into the air. She and her entourage flew quickly to the next cavern where they disappeared from my sight.

Enfys stayed. She was smaller than Goch, but still large, just nowhere near as large as the mature dragons. Thank you for coming. I’d so like to see the splinters and have adventures! Her eyes were bright, and the snake slitted pupils were dilated to almost round in her excitement.

I reached back and grabbed Sorcha’s arm and she stepped forward. “This is Sorcha. She would be your rider, if you are allowed to do this.”

Sorcha looked nervous, which wasn’t a good look on the steely warrior woman.

“Hi,” she said awkwardly.

Pleased to meet you Sorcha. Enfys danced a bit on her feet, something that Goch did when he was excited. It made me smile. Do you have many adventures?

Sorcha looked at me in panic.

“Yes, she has many. We just barely returned from the splinter named Avalon, where we were imprisoned and nearly killed.
